Moving!

Well, the blog is. I have been simultaneously trying to maintain two blogs and it ain't working. So, that means they all get consolidated to one and that's the end. All the posts will be on the new one. Click here to go over to the new one. Thanks for taking this journey with me.

I kiss and tell...

Fair Warning.

i am ready for the good times

Tonight was batted out of the park by none other than miss meims and amina with lady diamond stepping up as a pinch hitter. Vampire weekend, booze, ping-pong, Vietnamese food and celebrating the birthday early and random subway platform singalongs can spoil a girl. I love my life!

This is my paper heart...

photo from bitsy

This weekend was a lot of fun for me despite the frigid temperatures here in NYC. Saturday was a lazy day that involved laying in bed and watching movies, and Sunday was quite busy with meeting friends in two different boroughs.

Sunday was a treat, though, mostly because I was treated. I cannot express how much I appreciate and adore my friends. The lovely Amina treated me to brunch and several cups of hot chocolate on our outing Sunday afternoon. We wandered aimlessly around midtown for six hours. It was a lovely afternoon.

I left Amina to drop of cookies and clothing that I had borrowed from my friend Ericka. It was movie day at Casa De Queens so I plopped down on the floor and took in the cinema while I was there. It was in fact a 2 hour train ride through 3 boroughs, I might as well make it worth it. We watched "Paper Heart" with Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera. It was this scripted documentary. I really liked it mostly because I can relate.

I have had some of the conversations that are in the beginning of the movie, almost verbatim. I am one of the non-believers. The Beatles have famously said "All you need is love..." but I beg to differ. The movie was entertaining, even though it felt that Cera strong armed his way into the movie. I was disappointed in that plotline. But there was a point that was made in the movie that sometimes the chemicals just don't work.

For me, that has been the case. I very much want the starry-eyed fireworks, the "BOOM-POP-SIZZLE" as I like to refer to it. That feeling in the pit of your stomach that is a mix of sheer excitement, anticipation, and a slight hint of nausea. The adrenaline, the dopamine, the seratonin, it makes for utter euphoria. I WANT THAT!
I am by no means saying that I am unlovable, because lets be honest, I'm awesome. Seriously. But, I may have faulty wiring, full disclosure. If I could turn it on at my leisure I would, trust. Even the sweetest, most kind-hearted gent I've ever met (well in NYC anyway) tried, oh so hard, and I couldn't be swayed. I wanted to, boy did I, but I couldn't feel anything.

I know that you're thinking, maybe there was no chemistry, etcetera, so on, and whatnot. But never in my life? I'll be 25 next week (sad, I know) and not once, not ever. Sad Trombones Everywhere. I've read the books and the blogs and just about everything under the sun saying I should open myself up to the possibility, I tried it and you know what... it's malarkey. All of it. I'm not closing myself off to love, I'm just not that desperate for it. (Then why on earth have I wasted your brain matter on this post?) This may just be me, acquiescing to the powers that be in acknowledgment that it ain't gonna happen. At least now we all know.

You're welcome!

Welcome 2010!!! I'm so glad to finally meet you. You're predecessor wasn't too kind to me, so I am desperately hoping for things to change.

So, this is me early this morning after our little New Year's shindig. In my hand is an empty bottle formerly of cider. I learned from last year's mistakes and didn't want to spend today severely hungover. It's also proof that when I told my parents I was drinking cider, I was indeed telling the truth. I want to be better this year.

Speaking of being better, I did a kick ass job on my make-up last night. It is said that what ever you are doing when you ring in the new year is what you will do all year. That's why people kiss at midnight. I was too busy being glamorous. For realsies.

I am honestly looking forward to the new year. Last year was utter crap. I didn't make any resolutions for the year because I never keep them, but I do have aspirations for this year. I even got up and ran 3 miles today. I'm hoping that by April I'll be in shape to run the half marathon. We shall see.

This year, I may even go back to full vegetarianism. It's too early to tell. I've been eating fish and chicken this year b/c of the wonky way my body works, but I will take it one day at a time and just make sure that my body gets what it needs.

As there is a new beginning so must there be an end. I am at the end of my internship at the music magazine. I have learned so much in these past few months. Hopefully, I can go out into the world and parlay it into something big. One would hope.

I hope that this new year finds you happy and healthy. Follow your dreams and make 2010 great!

Because I'm lazy

So I missed new music tuesday... I would hate for you to miss out on what came out this week so here is a link of what came out this week courtesy of the Frisky. You're welcome.

wang out wednesday!!!!

I'm sorry, was that inappropriate? Well, it's wednesday folks. Get excited. We're halfway through the week. Hump day indeed. So this weekend was Ace!!! I got to see JPK and Rescue Bird on Saturday. I can't even contain the amazingness that insued. It's almost unfair to try and explain on this little old blog of mine. Go see either of them. You will be amazed. Sunday was Vega and Grizzly Bear on the water. The venue was on the water, not the band. That would have been a bit wierd. Lots of amazing stuff this weekend. I love NY. Last week me and a friend wanted to go swimming in the middle of the night after the JPK show and some decadent treats at Life Cafe brooklyn, so we went to the beach, at 2am. You can't do that where I'm from. And you can't do that with just anyone. So to my ACS, thanks for being so awesome. You're probably one of the most fun partners in snark. I probably should put a pic up but I didn't take any this weekend. So if you have any fun things to put up, email me. Have a great rest of the week.

Ta-dah Tuesday!!!!

It's the second day of the week, and you know what that means kiddos!!! NEW MUSIC TUESDAY!!! I'm excited, can you tell? Lots of good stuff released today. Namely, the Arctic Monkeys new album. They are amazing and I have all there stuff. I'm looking forward to getting "Humbug" and it got good reviews in this month's Spin. So, Yay! Also, Colbie Callaits sophomore album. I like her stuff. It's super mellow and reminds me of home (California). So I'll be listening for that as well. Then there is Imogen Heap (I told you, lots of good stuff) who is awesome. Today must be fated in the stars or something. Smokey Robinson, Ingrid Michaelson, Smile Empty Soul, Mew, Matisyahu, David Guetta, The Casualties, Willie-M/F-n-Nelson. I think I covered all the bases there. Any that you're excited to get mon petit amours?

Is The Music Business Dead?

The title by no means signifies that music is dead. No, because as long as humankind exist there will always be music. The issue here is the business of music dead? As record stores become extinct and record labels start to go the way of the dinosaur, is music no longer a money making endeavor? Especially with the advent of the internet, music has been able to diffuse faster but due to the lack of regulation of the web, profits are not what they used to be.

I, for one, am for the decentralization of the “Industry”. Who made the labels the tastemakers of what music should be? Very often many great bands go unsigned because they don’t fit into a marketable mold. And then we have the flip side of talentless tarts who get deals thrown at them because their shallow existence is agreeable to the paying public. For christsake people, Heidi Montag “sang” at the Miss Universe pageant last night. How is it she can be beamed into millions of living rooms across the nation and people in America don’t know who Muse is, and AC/DC & The Ramones are not part of music history? (personally, I did an independent study on the Sex Pistols sophomore year)

Maybe I’m being myopic in my stance. Labels are great at infusing money into the early careers of musicians, but the money is always paid back several times over. Musicians only really make money off of tours and sometimes merch, but CD sells always go back to the hand that feeds. My Basic belief is the money should go to the artists mostly and less to the companies. That’s just me. What do you think? Let Me Know in the comments.

Last night ruled!

So, I went to another El Jezel show last night and it was epic!!! I'm hoping if I blog enough I can get some more free merch (broke blogger alert). It was amazing. It was at spike hill in willamburg, which is always a free venue, so if you have a chance go. Opening was the amazing Jonathan Pilkington Khant, or JPK for short. He too was spurt of radness with his guitar and upright, which in the heat, carrying that thing anywhere, is a commendable feat. Then El Jezel played an up tempo set that got just about everyone moving. There were even devil horns thown in the audience at some point during the show (it wasn't me, I know better). If you get a chance to see them, GO! Seriously.
Afterwards, there were the usual shenanigans that me and my crew of awesome usually find. At one point of the night, I loudly chastised one of my companions for nursing a shot. He claimed he was enjoying fine whisky... well, then use a big boy cup and not a shot glass dear. :) But my friends are really amazing and I enjoy their company immensely. Especially at 1:30 in the morning on the subway while we blow bubbles in the train car. Life doesn't get anymore enchanted. To all my lovelies who bother reading my ramblings, click here.
Currently, I'm listening to Royksopp, Robyn and Emilie Simon. It's a party of one at my house and my face is being rocked off. I think I'm going to pick up Lykke Li to make it the axis of amazing. We shall see.
What are you listening to?

what is sexy...

So what is sexy anyway? I know I'm detering from the usual fare of drugs, sex and rock & roll, but a friend of mine said something last night that got me thinking. Last night a friend said to me "You're sexy, could you teach me to be sexy?" While I was flattered, I was thouroughly confused. You see, I'm a nerd. A huge nerd! Probably one of the biggest to ever grace humankind. As a child, I had poufy, untamed hair, huge glasses, buckteeth, and le piece de resistance, my mother made my clothes, and I went to public school. I never had a chance, kids. It's probably why I'm not super social and tend to internalize a great many of things. Nothing personal. But what is different now is that I'm way more comfortable in my own skin than I was then (most likely because I choose what I wear now). But I think that is key. See my role model for femme fatality is the late Ms. Eartha Kitt. She spoke 5 languages (nerd thing again), she was an international treasure, and even tagged by a president as a sex kitten (he meant it as a condemnation, but it sounds like a ringing endorsement to me). She owned it, and I guess that's integral. So regardless if you're super nerdy or have sex appeal oozing out you're pores, walk tall, walk confident, and feel good about yourself. People are bound to notice.

a little nerd lovin' to start the week

It's no secret among my friends that I am a nerd. I snort when I laugh, can spout off random minutiae at the drop of a dime, would rather stay home and read/watch the discovery channel than go out to a club. It's all these random quirks that makes me amazing (oddly enough, self-esteem isn't a problem for this nerd). That being said, I am highly enamoured with the be speckled counterparts of the opposite sex. I admit it... I love nerds! According to this article, studies show that nerds make better boyfriends and lovers. Take that roided up jocks!!!! Nice guys don't always finish last. In related news, there is also this article listing the merits of dating the sidekick as opposed to the leading man. Bruce Wayne always was a bit self-absorbed anyway.

Pulling a Socrates

I just finished reading Apology by Plato, which is Socrates' speech before he is sentanced to death, and it's a-mazing!!! Socrates is a fiesty one. I'm pretty sure the title is where we now get the word Apologetic(n.) from, cause he wasn't sorry for anything. I pulled a Socrates once, earlier this year when I quit Bloomingdale's. I probably should have read the story first, because as you can note it has it's consequences. But I will now summarize for you the story as well as defining the term; basically the speech goes like this:

My dear Athenians,
You don't know shit, You're full of shit, You ain't shit!
I'm out!
Socrates

You're welcome.

On the music front

Isn't this building lovely? I thought so too. So much so, infact, that my friend (whom I shall refer to as Asian Chicken Salad or ACS for short) tried to trespass on the property for a better look. We decided against it eventually, because it was too pretty a day to get arrested. That and we were highly visible. Sad Trombones. But in our trek around the building, we realized that it would make an awesome venue on the waterfront. The city is currently rebuilding it as it has become dilapidated over time. I look forward to see what they make of it.
In other news, I'm back to square one. I re-applied to management internships (crush again, yeah, I know). So I'm where I was this time last year, but with more experience. I need this to work out. I'm trying to be patient, but for those that know me... it's not one of my sterling qualities. :(
I like that people are starting to read this, it makes me happy. Also, it's new music tuesday!!! You know I love that!!! Here is a link to the releases for today, but most notably, and because I was reminded, is the release of Cobra Starship's "Hot Mess" Album. It's pretty good from what I've heard of it. I like Cobra's stuff. In fact, I just finished listening to "Hollaback Boy" If you haven't heard it, look it up on the interwebs, it's good stuff.
I'm going to try to put more content on here now that's it's being read. Is there anything you would like to see. I'll probably only post a couple times a week. I'll do my best to do that.
So til next time....
xoxo,
LOLa

shameless friend promotion

Ilove that my friends are super creative. It makes me feel awesome by proxy. I love to promote their projects, because i believe that's what friends do, support one another. I have a few friends that I think are definately worth checking out in their endevors:
El Jezel: (link 2 posts ago) Great brooklyn band, awesome people.
Chad Wilson: Creator extrordinare, amazing human being
Chaz Kangas: Multiple Free-style rap battle champion, Hilarious guy (P.S. you still owe me a beer)
The Kemistry: London band, heart of gold! Seriously, Kemi helped me move into my first brooklyn apartment. So, I'm kinda biased. Also, the music is fantastic.
True2Life: The music is great and a nicer bunch of guys you will never meet.
Gifted: While it's not my personal style, it's pretty good. It's getting buzz, and he's up and coming. Plus it's his birthday!
DJ Kurt Jo: I love this man!!! He's awesome, his music's awesome, he's just all-around awesome!
Mistress Jade: psychadelic trance DJ with international following. She's doing something right.
Meimi Yeung: My mischeivious buddy and amazing photographer.

Just to name a few of the awesome people I am so lucky to know. It's getting late and I'm getting sleepy. If I forgot anyone leave it in the comments and I'll get to it next time. Also send me stuff (I like free stuff) It's easier for me to tell people how awesome you are if say I have an album to tag, or photos, or etc. Did I mention, I like free stuff? :)

what's new

Hello Darlings,
So, it’s been a while. Sorry about that. Lot’s going on. What’s new with you? Me, you ask? (and thank you very kindly for asking) Oh, nothing except funemployment. Also this thing called Warped Tour, maybe you’ve heard of it. I will be working on it a couple of days next week. GLEE! But seriously, enough about me.
IF you’re going to Warped, I highly recommend stopping at the rock for health booth. Why? Because it’s awesome, and I said so. But really because they are doing amazing things, namely getting artists healthcare. This is very, very important, which is why I’m volunteering with them. Everyone knows a sick artist doesn’t perform as well as a healthy one. Their site is pretty cool too. It has lots of useful tips for people on the road, rockstar or not. It’s handy to keep in your browser. Just a thought.
My new music obsession…El Jezel. But I may be biased. So what?!? This is one of my favorite songs off of the Warmer Frequency album. I also really dig “Siberia”. I got a chance to hang out with them after their show this weekend and had a blast. We had a little impromptu shindig at their rehearsal space. Good times had by all. Warmer Frequency is their second album, and they also have an EP. It’s all good music, and they’re good people. So click on over and check them out.
Cupcake kisses & chocolate frosting wishes

it's been a long time

So, I'm moved into my new place...Yay! It's a-mazing. My roommates are exceptional and sweet. Right now, I'm sitting on my bed listening to the new Two Tongues album and eating peach rings (nutritious). The album is OK. It got rave reviews as it being the best material that Max Bemis (of Say Anything) or Chris Conley (of Saves the Day) had ever put out in their previous efforts. WRONG! Is A Real Boy is an amazing album, damn near epic, but not quite. I admit that parts of it are a bit histrionic, but given that's where the Bemis' head space was, it was pitch perfect. And yes, I'm biased, it is one of my favorite albums. But I didn't even bother with Defense of the Genre. Wasn't impressed. Maybe it is true that genius is a step away from psychosis. I'm glad that Bemis is more balanced now, but it doesn't make for any interesting songs, sadly. I suppose I'd rather have luke warm songs then the singer being committed again. I digress.
What I'm looking forward to hearing is the new Meg & Dia album. I haven't heard it at all yet so I don't know what I'm in for so we will see. It's supposed to be their most personal album yet. I'll let you know after I listen to it.
The other day, at the record store, we noticed something interesting. It seems that what ever music you are into in your adolescence, tends to be an indicator of your musical tastes for the rest of your life. My first albums were: Tragic Kingdom, Jagged Little Pill, Garbage, and Sheryl Crow. All on cassette. Spiderwebs came on the loud speakers at the store and memories of me dancing on my bed with the hair brush singing along with Gwen Stefani all came back. Everyone remembers their first album, it's like a first kiss, it can be amazing, or embarrassing. What was yours?
While I like a lot of indie pop, classic rock, etc., I still have a special place for girl fronted rock bands. Can't help it. It's at my musical core.
